The Nasugawacho area has been a temple town with over 20 temples and shrines since the days of the Nanbu Morioka Domain. In order to increase its authority and the prosperity of the castle town, the domain moved the historic temples within its territory to two areas: the Kitayama Temple Group and the Temple Group Under the Southern Temple (Daijijicho, Morioka City).
Teramachi Street, once an important road connecting the coast with the inland, has been reborn as a new road, with white walls on both sides, street lamps made of Nambu ironware, large zelkova trees, and cobblestone-style sidewalks. Together with the beauty of the wooden temple architecture, this creates a charming landscape, and the road has been selected as one of the “100 Best Roads in Japan.”
